An Error Analysis on the Using of Reported Speech Made by the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Girimarto in 2011/2012 Academic year
Abstract
The objectives of this study are to describe type of errors are made by the students, to describe the most errors made by the students, and to describe how far the errors made by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Girimarto in 2011/2012 academic year.
The method used in this study is descriptive method. The research was carried out in January 2012. It was conducted to the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Girimarto in 2011/2012 academic year consisting of 140 students. There were 20 students or 14% of the population taken randomly by lottery as the sample out of five classes. To get the data, the writer used a test as the instrument; there were 30 items in essay type. From the results of the test, the researcher got the data to be analyzed.
From the computation of errors, there were 312 errors made by the students in applying reported speech. Based on the types of errors, there are four types, namely: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Misformation has a highest number of errors (153 errors or 49.04%). Then, it is followed by omission (103 errors or 33.01%), addition (48 errors or 15.39%) and the last is misordering (8 or 2.56%). And from the results of the computation shows that command type, especially in using verb infinitive has the highest number of errors (34 errors or 10.9%) and the lowest error is statement type in using modal (2 errors or 0.64%). From the data, it can be concluded that the students have low ability in using reported speech.
